Overview

This specialized course provides a comprehensive, code-compliant framework for the design and execution of strengthening works for both reinforced concrete and steel structures in Abu Dhabi.
Through ten structured modules, participants will progress from conceptual understanding to field application - learning how to plan, assess, design, and implement strengthening systems fully aligned with ADIBC 2013, ACI, AISC, and ASCE standards.

The course integrates theoretical principles with field practices, covering inspection and diagnosis, design methodologies, construction execution, quality assurance, and health and safety. It equips engineers with the skills to prepare accurate, approval-ready technical documentation, apply international best practices, and deliver strengthening projects that are safe, durable, and municipality-compliant.

Whether you are a structural designer, site engineer, consultant, or project reviewer, this course will empower you to confidently manage strengthening works- from initial assessment to final approval.

Course Deliverables

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize key strengthening concepts, principles, and governing codes (ADIBC, ACI, AISC, ASCE).

  • Prepare a Condition Assessment Report using inspection and NDT results.

  • Develop strengthening design concepts for concrete and steel structures.

  • Perform design calculations and detailing for RC and steel strengthening systems.

  • Draft method statements and execution procedures aligned with DMT standards.

  • Implement QA/QC and ITP documentation for field verification and approvals.

  • Apply HSE and risk-management practices during strengthening works.

  • Analyze real Abu Dhabi case studies and apply lessons learned.

  • Complete a final assessment portfolio demonstrating full technical competency.

Introduction & Codes Arrow

This module introduces the key concepts, objectives, and governing framework of structural strengthening for concrete and steel structures. It explains the difference between strengthening, repair, and rehabilitation, highlights causes of structural deficiencies, and presents fundamental principles such as compatibility, durability, and constructability. The module also reviews ADIBC 2013, ACI 562, ACI 318, ACI 440, AISC 360, and ASCE 41 as the main codes guiding strengthening design and approval in Abu Dhabi.

This module focuses on evaluating existing structures through visual inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), and material testing. Participants learn to analyze structural data, identify weaknesses, determine safety levels, and prepare a Condition Assessment Report in line with ADIBC and DMT submission requirements.

This module presents the core design philosophy for structural strengthening, including defining objectives, identifying load paths, selecting appropriate strengthening systems, and verifying safety, serviceability, and constructability. It emphasizes capacity restoration and compliance with ACI and ASCE design procedures.

This module covers strengthening systems for reinforced concrete members such as columns, beams, slabs, and foundations. It includes RC and steel jacketing, bonded steel plates, section enlargement, FRP systems, and external post-tensioning, emphasizing composite action, durability, and verification through ACI and ADIBC standards.

This module enables participants to identify deterioration mechanisms such as corrosion, fatigue, section loss, and buckling, and design strengthening systems like cover plates, stiffeners, bracing, CFRP applications, and connection retrofits. Designs are verified against AISC 360, AWS D1.1, and ADIBC with attention to fabrication, protection, and QA/QC compliance.

This module translates design into safe, buildable, and verifiable site operations, covering preparation, shoring, bonding, RC/steel jacketing, FRP application, bracing, and base isolation. It integrates QA/QC plans, ITPs, Acceptance Tests, and HSE procedures to ensure field compliance and municipality approval.

This module outlines the quality management framework for strengthening projects, covering inspection protocols, acceptance criteria, QA/QC logs, and documentation to support municipality submission and final approval.

This module addresses risk management, worker protection, and environmental compliance during strengthening operations, with practical guidance for handling materials, cutting, welding, and confined-space activities.

This module presents real-life case studies from Abu Dhabi projects, analyzing structural challenges, applied strengthening solutions, and documentation workflows required for DMT and municipality approvals.

The final module reviews all key principles covered throughout the course, reinforcing theoretical and practical understanding before a comprehensive final assessment that evaluates participants’ ability to design, execute, and document strengthening projects.
